A Lifetime of Learning

Janet Cevelin Fletcher, the creator of 'Toreutics Studios' and 'Magic In The Metal', is a sculptural artist, jeweler, and educator of nearly two decades of experience and various professional skills training.  

Since early childhood, Janet felt driven to deeply study anything that interested her, so that she could share what she learned with others.  An avid fan of old books, she spent her youth reading about sciences, human history, culture, ancient art, mechanical inventions, archaeology and literature.  Her fascination with learning drove her to pursue a life of artistic study, creative practice, and education.

Janet studied metalworking, drawing and painting, and ceramic clay at the Greenville Fine Arts Center from 1998-2000.   After high school, she worked in Karat Plus of Haywood Mall, running programmable engraving while also studying bench jewelry repair and custom jewelry sales.  Soon afterwards, Janet took apprenticeship under Irizarry Customs for bench jeweler’s goldsmithing and ‘lost wax’ gold casting processes.  

Janet attended Greenville Technical College to study Biological Sciences, Anatomy, Physiology, and Chemistry, but also took Ceramic Clay Studies under Ben Kammer, as well as Sculptural Design and Green Sand Casting under Linda McCune.   Janet has since acquired an Associates Degree in Arts and an Associates Degree in Science, simultaneously.

Throughout years of self-guided study, research, and hands-on training with skilled craftspeople, Janet continues to expand her spectrum of artistic processes and sculptural mediums.  Janet expects to continue a lifetime of learning, practicing, and experimenting with new processes as well as traditional ones, and hopes to share her voyage, by teaching processes and techniques to others.
